Critically acclaimed choreographer and chuthis. Artistic Director Peter Chu returns to Vancouver for an artistic residency at The Cultch, July 2 to 12, 2014. Chu will begin creation on an original full-length work - a solo project inspired by Las Vegas lounge acts of the 1960's, which will enjoy its US premiere in Las Vegas in 2015.

"I'm absolutely thrilled that The Cultch has opened their doors to allow me the space, time, and creative freedom to dig deep into this new solo work," says Chu. "This latest creation draws largely on the attitudes and passions of performers from old Las Vegas coupled with the famous venues that have a rich history of presenting these iconic artists - intimate spaces very similar to The Cultch's Historic Theatre. I can't think of a better place to begin this journey."

This newest solo project, choreographed and danced by Chu, will reach deep into themes of doubt and explore perceptions of reality, showcasing the highs and lows that come with a life in the spotlight. Chu will incorporate lighting, sound, and sophisticated multimedia elements to pull back the curtain on celebrity, exposing the audience to the, oftentimes, unforgiving misconceptions of what it means to be an entertainer, and the glorification of false idols.

A remarkably talented artist, Chu has developed a multi-faceted and enviable dance career, building a strong presence in both the commercial and concert worlds over the last decade. After graduating from the Juilliard School in 2002, Chu has danced with BJM _Danse, EZdanza, as the lead dancer in singer Christina Perri's Jar of Hearts music video, and in Celine Dion's Vegas spectacle A New Day. Most recently, Chu joined Kidd Pivot for an international tour of the critically acclaimed contemporary work, The Tempest Replica.

A sought-after choreographer, Chu has created expressive, imaginative, and thought-provoking works for Naomi Stikeman's Çaturn, Houston Metropolitan Contemporary Dance Company, Orlando Ballet Theatre, Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company, Western Michigan University, and the NDT Summer Intensive. Earlier this year, Chu's explosive choreography was showcased at the respected Springboard Danse Montréal, where chuthis. was represented as a 2014 Emerging Principal Company. Following The Cultch residency, Chu will be New York-bound to work with the revered Movement Intensive Project. From there, he will rejoin the prolific Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) for a second season at the Summer Intensive as a resident choreographer.
