A Spam donut? It's surprisingly tasty and even has some gourmet flair. South Bay diners will be able to see for themselves starting July 24.

Psycho Donuts has teamed up with City Lights Theater Company to create an original "Spam Wellington" donut, celebrating City Lights' big summer musical: Monty Python's SPAMALOT. Picture a savory treat with layers of Spam and mushroom duxelle (a mixture of mushroom, onion, garlic, butter, salt, pepper, and cooking sherry). It's all nestled inside a plain donut pastry with sesame seeds on top.

The gourmet flair is courtesy of Psycho Surgeon General Ashley Searby, the International Culinary Center graduate who dreamed up the donut. The Spam Wellington is a rare savory creation for Psycho Donuts, which usually focuses on sweet pastries. For this one, they passed on the glaze.

Psycho Donuts will sell the Spam Wellington in its San Jose store at 288 S. Second St. and its Campbell store at 2006 S. Winchester Blvd. during the run of SPAMALOT: July 24-August 31. SPAMALOT ticket holders can also get 10 percent off donut purchases by presenting a ticket stub (paper or electronic) at Psycho Donuts. Specialty donuts often sell out, so customers may wish to call 408-533-1023 to check availability, or order online.

The silliness of a Spam donut is in tune with the farcical humor of Monty Python. SPAMALOT is lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It retells the Camelot legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, featuring beautiful showgirls, dancing knights, and killer rabbits. Original Python Eric Idle wrote the book and lyrics, and teamed up with film composer John Du Prez to pen the music.

SPAMALOT shows are Thursday-Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. (no matinee July 27). There are also three 8 p.m. Wednesdays: August 13, 20, and 27. The run begins with Pay-What- You-Can Night at 8 p.m. on July 24, followed by $17 Preview Night at 8 p.m. July 25. Other ticket prices are $17-$35.

City Lights Theater Company creates provocative live productions that engage, inspire, and challenge audiences and artists alike through innovative concepts, intimate staging, and uncompromising storytelling. The theater is at at 529 S. Second St. in downtown San Jose. For tickets and information, go to cltc.org or call 408-295-4200.
