City Theatre's 90th Mainstage Season, presented by Raymond James, kicks off with Black Comedy, at 4025 31st Street South, St. Petersburg.

Written by Peter Shaffer and directed by Rob Colwell, Black Comedy involves a struggling artist about to meet both his fiancée's father and a major art investor on the same evening. Lovesick and desperate, sculptor Brindsley Miller has embellished his apartment with furniture and objects d'arte "borrowed" from the absent antique collector next door hoping to impress his fiancee's pompous father and a wealthy art dealer. When the fussy neighbor returns just as a blown fuse plunges the apartment into darkness, Brindsley is revealed teetering on the verge of very ripe farce. Unexpected guests, aging spinsters, errant phone cords and other snares impede his frantic attempts to return the purloined items before light is restored. As darkness falls over the apartment and guests, much more is revealed about the artist than he ever wanted brought to light.

Performances are September 12-28, Fridays & Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 2pm. Tickets are $22.00. Call the box office at 727-866-1973 or visit www.spcitytheatre.org to purchase tickets.
